Larry Allen, a legendary figure for the Cowboys, passed away on Sunday at the age of 52 while vacationing with his family in Mexico.

Allen, a first-ballot Hall of Famer inducted in 2013, was celebrated as a member of the All-Decade team for both the 1990s and 2000s. His NFL career spanned 14 seasons from 1994 to 2007, with the first 12 of those years spent with the Cowboys.

Allen is one of only three Cowboys in the team’s history to achieve double-digit Pro Bowl selections, earning 10 Pro Bowls and seven All-Pro honors during his time with Dallas. He concluded his career with the 49ers, securing an 11th Pro Bowl selection in 2006.

The Cowboys released a statement on Monday morning regarding Allen’s death, highlighting his impressive journey. Drafted in the second round of the 1994 NFL Draft from Sonoma State in California, Allen quickly made a name for himself with his remarkable combination of size and strength. His speed was particularly notable during a Monday Night Football game in New Orleans in his rookie year when he chased down Saints linebacker Darion Conner after an interception, preventing a touchdown. The MNF announcers, Frank Gifford, Al Michaels, and Dan Dierdorf, were astonished by Allen’s agility and quickness given his size.

Allen’s strength, however, was his most defining attribute. Renowned for bench-pressing over 700 pounds in the early 2000s, he overpowered his opponents with sheer brute force.

His versatility was also notable. Early in his career, he transitioned from guard to tackle, earning Pro Bowl selections from 1995 to 1997 at guard, and then achieving Pro Bowl and All-Pro honours as a tackle in 1998. He eventually returned to guard, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest to ever play the position.

In 2019, Allen was recognized as one of seven guards named to the NFL’s Top 100 players list, cementing his place among the sport’s elite.
